Clash Royale beginner tips: 12 rules that win more games
Most early wins come from Elixir. Defend for less than your opponent spent attacking, never sit at 10 Elixir, keep your spells off the King's Tower, and play a balanced deck that costs around 3 to 4 Elixir on average.
The numbers every beginner should know
- Starting Elixir
- 5
- Max Elixir
- 10
- Normal regen
- 1 per 2.8 s
- Double Elixir
- 1 per 1.4 s
- Triple Elixir
- ≈1 per 0.9 s
- Battle length
- 3 min + overtime
12 rules that win more games
- Don't sit at 10 Elixir. Elixir stops building at 10. Every 2.8 seconds you sit there, you lose an Elixir you'd otherwise have had.
- Defend for less than they attacked with. That's a positive Elixir trade. Arrows (3) on Minion Horde (5) or Skeleton Army (3) on a Giant (5) are both +2.
- Let your towers help. Your Crown Towers shoot for free, so defending near them usually wins the trade. Counter-attack with whatever survives.
- Don't open with your big card. Starting with a heavy push at 5 Elixir leaves you nothing to defend with. In the first minute, play a cheap card at the back or wait for your opponent.
- Watch the clock. After 2 minutes Elixir comes twice as fast, and after 4 minutes (in overtime) three times as fast. Save big pushes for Double Elixir.
- Keep spells off the King's Tower. Hitting the King's Tower before a Crown Tower falls wakes it up, and it then defends for the rest of the game. It also wakes when a Crown Tower is destroyed.
- Track their cycle. You hold 4 of your 8 cards at a time. If their counter was just played, it won't be back for a few cards, so that's your window to attack.
- Build a balanced deck. Aim for a win condition, two spells (one small, one big), air defence, a building or tank killer, and cheap cycle cards.
- Keep average Elixir around 3 to 4. Most top Ranked decks sit here. Under 3 cycles fast but hits softly; over 4.5 is easy to punish.
- Level one deck, not your collection. Gold is the bottleneck. Upgrading eight cards gets you further than spreading Gold over 30.
- Copy a proven deck first. Learn on a deck that's already winning, then adapt it to your levels.
- Learn from losses. Open the battle replay and look for the moment you went negative on Elixir. That's usually where the game was lost.

How a battle is won
You win by having more crowns when time runs out. Destroying a Crown Tower is one crown, and destroying the King's Tower is three and ends the game. If it's level after three minutes, the game goes to overtime, where the next tower destroyed wins. If overtime ends level too, a tiebreaker drains every tower until the one with the lowest health falls.
That's why chip damage matters. A Crown Tower at 30% health is an easy target for a spell in overtime, and a single successful push in Double Elixir often decides a close game.
How to level cards without wasting Gold
- Pick one deck early and put Gold into those eight cards. Our upgrade calculator shows the cards and Gold each level needs.
- Use Wild Cards on Epics and Legendaries, which are harder to collect than Commons.
- Request your deck's cards from your clan every time you can.
- Unlock an Evolution for your deck when you get the shards (see our Evolution guide).
Find a deck that suits your cards on the best decks page, or build your own in the deck builder, which shows average Elixir and 4-card cycle as you go.
Common mistakes
- Overcommitting: putting all your Elixir into one push while your opponent has a cheap counter in hand.
- Zapping or Logging the King's Tower by accident with a spell aimed at a Crown Tower.
- Dropping your win condition at the bridge with no support. It's easy to defend for a positive trade.
- Changing decks after every loss. Stick with one long enough to learn its matchups.
- Spreading Gold across every card you unlock.

FAQ
How fast does Elixir regenerate in Clash Royale?
1 Elixir every 2.8 seconds at first, every 1.4 seconds once Double Elixir starts at the two-minute mark, and about every 0.9 seconds in Triple Elixir after four minutes. You start with 5 and can hold 10.
What is a positive Elixir trade?
Spending less Elixir to defend than your opponent spent attacking. For example, The Log (2) clearing a Goblin Gang (3) is a +1 trade.
Should I hit the King's Tower with spells?
Usually not before a Crown Tower falls. Damaging the King's Tower wakes it up, and it then helps defend for the rest of the game.
What is a good average Elixir for a deck?
Most top Ranked decks average about 3 to 4 Elixir. Below 3 cycles fast but hits softly; above 4.5 is heavy and easy to punish.
